Standing proudly at Quarry Hill, between Leeds Playhouse and Leeds City College, the striking new sculpture Ribbons is a powerful tribute to the women who have shaped the city. Among the 383 names intricately woven into its corten steel ribbons is Jude, a fitting recognition of her impact and contribution to Leeds.
To have my work recognised in this way is truly special, and a great honour. Pippa Hale is an extraordinary artist and her piece celebrating all these women, including myself is a testament to all women – Jude
Ribbons is comprised of five intertwining steel ribbons, each carrying the names of nominated women from the city. As they rise from the ground and twist together, the structure creates an elegant dance of flowing patterns, symbolising the interconnectedness of generations of women who have helped shape the history and future of Leeds. This contemporary sculpture blends movement and strength, contrasting beautifully with the crisp geometry of its surrounding buildings at Quarry Hill.
More than just an artwork, Ribbons is a statement of recognition. It acknowledges both past and present women who have played a pivotal role in the city’s development. Jude’s name, among many others, now stands as a lasting tribute to the diverse and inspiring contributions made by women from all walks of life.
